SVB Awards $10K Grant for Financial Assistance

The SVB Foundation recently awarded FTSV a $10,000 grant to underwrite financial assistance for 72 underserved participants. This allows these youth access to an 8-week life and golf skills class taught by mentors providing a safe, positive, welcoming and nurturing experience. The funds will help us to continue to serve a diverse population of youth regardless of background especially those experiencing the opportunity gap prevalent in Silicon Valley

The SVB Foundation is currently focusing on partnering with employees who regularly volunteer to award grants to non-profit organizations that are most passionate about. Reka Mishra, SVB Executive, Finance – Chief Officer and Head of Strategy was recruited to join FTSV’s Board in 2019 to be instrumental in providing leadership in the areas of STEM Programming and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI). Reka shared, “I was drawn to their mission to develop youth throughout Silicon Valley, transforming their lives and giving them a brighter future. Being an advocate for STEM, I consulted on their innovative platform to offer under-served youth the opportunity to develop both personally and professionally while exposing them to STEM concepts for improved career choices. I am also proud to serve an organization that holds DEI at the core of their identity and ensures it is part of our culture and present in all aspects of our business.”

Kids are never turned away from taking FTSV’s youth development through golf classes due to an inability to pay. We work to actively create a space of belonging for every kid – no matter what walk of life. Our diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) efforts are not a project, program or series of events, but an expression of who we are and a purposeful process to ensure our mission is fulfilled. We offer programs for kids and teens up to age 18. We help kids discover what’s inside of them, guide them to strengthen it, and mentor them to put it into action in everything they do.

FTSV offers financial assistance for our 8-week season on a sliding scale from $20 to $180 depending upon need, which is determined by self-reported household income, number in the household, enrollment in the SFLP, and financial hardship. Due to the impact of Covid-19, our low-income families have experienced increased financial hardship which has increased our number of requests for aid and an increased number of families only able to pay $20. The demand for our classes is at an all-time high with families looking for safe outdoor naturally social distanced activities for their children during a pandemic.

Thank you SVB Foundation for providing the necessary funds so we can expand our financial aid program to more families in need. The grant will allow us to continue providing our youth development program which enable kids and teens to build the strength of character that empowers them through a lifetime of new challenges by seamlessly integrating the game of golf with life skills.

Gabriela Mata Selected for the National Hispanic Recognition Program Award.

Gabriela Mata was one of 3 recipients of the National Hispanic Recognition Program at her high school. The award is one of four awards that the College Board provides to students excelling in academics. To be eligible, participants must have an unweighted GPA of 3.5 or higher, must take a minimum of 2-3 AP classes, and score in the top 10% on PSAT/NMSQT.

Gabriela has been in our program since 2015 and is currently an Ace level participant, which is the top First Tee – Silicon Valley level in our program. She also volunteers her time as a FTSV coach for our younger participant classes. Her lead instructors rave about her leadership skills and her ability to positively manage her group. She has a charismatic approach and speaks to her students at a level they can relate to and feel comfortable with.

“FTSV has had a profound impact on me in terms of harboring a community of support and guidance that I believe is crucial to young people,” says Gabriela. “FTSV has given me a sense of responsibility and has introduced me to a network of people that I can rely on. The program has also taught me important life skills for the future, like goal setting and perseverance, that are more than applicable to life beyond the game of golf.”

When she is not at FTSV, she works for the Evergreen Library. She is also one of the lead students in her Community Development Student Planning Committee, which provides a space for students to learn and share their own mental and health experiences and struggles. In the committee she plans out events as well as identifies their keynote speaker. Additionally, she hosts a workshop centered on intersectionality and mental health and how race, social class, and gender affects access to mental health services.

Congratulations Gabriela on your well-deserved honor! We are fortunate to have you in our program and we are excited for your future endeavors.

Positivity by Letting Go of Mistakes

Golf is a game of misses. We “miss” more than we “make” and progression is seldomly linear. There are ebbs and flows, ups and downs as we try to improve. As a result, golfers become familiar with adversity and learn strategies to manage emotions and persevere.

Part of managing emotions is learning how to approach mistakes. When mistakes occur in a public place, like a class, or when playing in front of family and friends, they can lower moral. More importantly, they can create self-doubt, which can negatively impact future shots and hinder one’s desire to take risks or participate in future challenges. The problem with that is we learn best when we are challenged, when we are pushed into our stretch zone, and when we make mistakes. The questions then become:  How do we view mistakes as important learning opportunities instead of signs of failure? and How do we stay positive when mistakes occur?

To address these questions, we partnered with Positive Coaching Alliance, and utilized their concepts called “mistake rituals” and “parking mistakes.” According to PCA, “a mistake ritual is a gesture and statement that individuals use to ward off the fear of making mistakes so they don’t play timidly. A mistake ritual allows athletes to quickly reset and get ready for the next play or decision without wallowing in the past and beating themselves up for having made a mistake. There are many mistake rituals, but here are some that we especially like. One is “Flushing Mistakes.” When your athlete makes a mistake on the playing field, you can simply put your hand above your shoulder and make a motion like you are flushing a toilet. You can add commentary to the flush: “It’s okay, Omar. Flush it. Next play.”

Our FTSV coaches have incorporated the mistake rituals during games in class. When we teach our core lesson, “Three Tips for Having Fun,” the mistake ritual is one of the tools we coach to stay positive and patient. Our coaches recognize that dwelling over mistakes does not help the next shot. However, our coaches understand their role is to not to ignore mistakes, but instead to provide coachable moments and help instill a habit of learning from mistakes. The difficult part is finding the right time to address mistakes.

As mentioned earlier, making a mistake in front of others can be difficult for many participants, and coaches need to find the right time for a coachable moment. A solution is to use PCA’s concept of a “parking lot ritual.” The idea is to “park the mistake in the parking lot” so they can move on, stay positive, continue with the game, and be in the present. Once the game is over they can return to the “parking lot” to examine what there is to learn from their mistake and what adjustments they can make for next time. Worrying about each mistake in the heat of a game or competition causes doubt, especially when the mistake is made in front of others. Playing with doubt negatively impacts a participant’s ability to play freely and confidently. As a result, we try to shift the coachable moments to when a participant is ready to analyze the mistake, free from the judgment of others.

This winter we look forward to another fun season and helping participants treat mistakes as opportunities to learn. We also look forward to developing strategies for participants to stay positive and be in the present.

Registration for the winter season opens Thursday, November 3rd at 11am. The season will start November 29th and will end February 4th with two weeks off, December 20th through December 31st.  The classes will take place at Baylands Golf Links in Palo Alto, Rancho Del Pueblo Golf Course in San Jose, and Gavilan Golf Course in Gilroy.  We encourage youth 2nd grade and above to join our program and help spread the word. “We are excited and grateful to have all 5 as FTSV coaches,” says Program Director, Chris Moreno-Hunt.  “They exude positivity, demonstrate care for their participants, and each bring their unique skills sets to the team and to their classes.”

FTSV in the Community

As schools return so do FTSV’s outreach program and outreach events.

In August, FTSV attended a National Night Out event at Capitol Park in East San Jose. Families from the surrounding area, which is located 5 minutes from Rancho Del Pueblo Golf Course, gathered in a festive event put on by District 5’s Capitol Goss/Dobern Park. FTSV set up our plastic clubs, Velcro targets and marketing material then interacted with families, police officers, and fire fighters, who even played a few of our games.

Later in the month, FTSV attended a community “Maze Day” where parents/guardians of schools in North Fair Oaks and Redwood City go to sign up for classes, get backpacks, and learn about the myriad of community organizations.

In September, FTSV will be participating in an ARUSD Back to the District event, and a community partner night at Police Activities League – Redwood City.

In addition to the community events, FTSV is engaging in discussions with over 15 schools to bring our Community Partner outreach program (CP program) back into their PE and afterschool programs. Participating students are then able to play golf games and learn our Nine Core Values at their schools. Students who enjoy the CP program are encouraged to also join our golf course program at Rancho Del Pueblo, Baylands, or Gavilan Golf Courses. We are fortunate to have several participants that joined our golf course program through a CP program or through a community event, and have progressed to our advance levels. Most of whom are giving back and mentoring the younger participants as volunteer coaches, and some have even assisted us in the aforementioned community events.

“Our team enjoys speaking with families and community partners,” says FTSV Program Director, Chris Moreno-Hunt. “Collaboration and giving back are key for a strong community and we are fortunate to work with a team of community and school leaders that share that vision.”

If you are interested in our CP outreach program, please click here, or contact us at 408-508-4885.

If you are interested in having us attend a community event, please call 408-508-4884.

Franky Sumcad competes in 2022 PURE Insurance Championship this month!

First Tee – Silicon Valley Ace participant and volunteer coach, Franky Sumcad, will compete with top senior professional golfers at the world-famous Pebble Beach and Spyglass Golf Links. The tournament will start Friday, September 23rd and will be televised on Golf Channel 7pm-9pm on 9/23, 12pm-3pm on 9/24, and 12pm-3pm on 9/25.

She is one of 81 top First Tee golfers from around the country selected to participate in this official PGA TOUR Champions event. The PURE Insurance Championship pairs one First Tee junior with a PGA TOUR Champions player and two amateurs. In addition to the competition, Franky will be attending the Legends & Leaders speaker program, which features notables from the business, sports and entertainment industries.

Meet Franky:

Franky is a terrific FTSV participant since 2012 and is a dedicated FTSV volunteer since 2020. She has volunteered as a coach in classes and at our Girls Golf events, and assisted at our fundraisers. She is also a high-performing competitive golfer. She is number 1 on her high school team and recently placed 3rd in the First Tee National Championship.

Congratulations Franky! Please join us in wishing her good luck in the tournament.

Interested in joining Franky and other FTSV participants in our First Tee classes? Please check out our youth classes page. Our fall program has started, but registration for the winter season will open November 3rd.

First Tee – Silicon Valley’s Adult/Junior Tournament – Mentoring, Fun, and Pizza!

On Saturday, 8/20, 36 participants across all FTSV levels combined with an adult mentor and took part in a fun 9-hole Adult/Junior tournament. Many of our participants paired up with their parent/guardian, and the remaining were paired with a FTSV coach or board member. Thank you to the participants/parents/guardians/coaches/board members for playing. A golf tournament is a perfect opportunity for mentoring to occur because it includes challenging situations, opportunities for growth, self-reflection, and collaboration.  Playing a 2-person alternate shot tournament encourages teamwork, communication, and strategy. We were proud to see all teams bonding and assisting one another.

While much of our FTSV programs are highly structured, mentoring also occurs in the “informal space” of classes and other activities like a golf tournament. Such “informal space” could be when transitioning from one hole to another, down time, and during other non-structured activities. In this case, we had a post tournament pizza award ceremony where everyone hung out together and ate pizza under the sun. It is in this environment where bonds are formed that mentoring is especially reinforced. We enjoyed having everyone together and hope everyone else did too!

Each division (Par, Birdie, & Eagle/Ace) was quite competitive as seen in the scores below. All of our young golfers truly have bright futures ahead of them.

Results

Par Division:

  1. Justin & Taddy Guo: 38
  2. Edwin Sanchez & Tanner Arrizabalaga: 40
  3. Wyatt & Wayne Doiguchi: 42

Birdie Division:

  1. Ben & Brent Hughes: 35
  2. Jesse & Joey Jang: 35
  3. Sebastian Hernandez & Steven Pan: 37

Eagle/Ace Division:

  1. Tristan Hipolito & Lorna Llamas: 38
  2. Salma Rivera & Chris Moreno-Hunt: 39
  3. Leonardo Villegas Luiz & Frank Wilde: 41

Long Drive Winners:

  1. Victor Kotlyar (Par)
  2. Erik Chavez (Birdie)
  3. Tristan Hipolito (Eagle/Ace).

Closest to the Pin Winners:

  1. Benjamin Hughes (Birdie) had a contest best 7 ft 4 in away from the hole!
  2. Tristan Hipolito (Eagle/Ace) won his division as well, meaning he triple medaled in the all of the competitive course contests!

In summary, it was a special day at Rancho del Pueblo Golf Course. Thank you to all the families and mentors that were able to hangout before and after the awards ceremony, helping to further build our sense of community and family in First Tee – Silicon Valley.

If you missed this tournament, please be on the lookout for our next pre-season tournament on November 12th. We will be organizing a golf tournament where the participants are paired with the Stanford and Santa Clara Golf team members. We host (4) pre-season tournaments throughout the year, which offers participants competitive opportunities in a fun environment. Please click here to learn more.

Fall Girls’ Golf Play Day

First Tee – Silicon Valley (FTSV) hosted our Fall Pre-Season Girls Golf Play Day on Saturday, August 20th, 2022 at Rancho del Pueblo Golf Course. The theme of the event was Woodland Wonderland.
Seventeen of FTSV’s youth participants had a wonder-fall time playing golf and socializing with new friends. This event provided an opportunity for the girls to develop their confidence, find their own voice, identify their talents, and inspire them to live active and healthy lifestyles.

On the course, the girls engaged with each other and worked as a team, following a 2-person alternate shot format. They gained new friends, shared stories about their favorite memories in the past year, and discussed their future aspirations. One of our participants shared that she imagines herself becoming an LPGA instructor! A few other participants also discussed becoming coaches and will register this winter to be FTSV volunteer coaches. It is inspiring to hear the girls share how they want to help out their community and have the confidence to give back.

The event concluded with a team crafting activity, where they customized their own picture frame. We hope this experience of building new friends and playing golf together was memorable for our girls, and that they take the lessons learned to help them as they grow into amazing women in our society.

We believe in our Girls Golf participants, and we want to continue providing them with a supportive go-to team and opportunities to build skills that are necessary in reaching their dreams and goals. If you are interested in making a positive difference and mentoring youth for First Tee – Silicon Valley & Girls Golf, please visit: firstteesiliconvalley.org/about/volunteer/ and contact us at (408) 508-4880 or [email protected].

FTSV Classes Teach Kids to Overcome Challenges and Manage Emotions

Register your child for the Fall Season on August 11th

First Tee – Silicon Valley classes are a great opportunity for participants to learn many life lessons including overcoming challenges and managing emotions.  Registration for the fall program opens 8/11 at 10am. Fall season begins September 6th  and ends October 29th.

There are three zones that people fluctuate between when confronted with challenges;  panic zone, stretch zone, and comfort zone. The adjectives below in each zone represent common feelings that we either learn to manage, strive for, or develop tools to overcome.

(RYAN, A. AND MARKOVA, D., 2006)

In our program we provide strategies for participants to manage emotions, especially those associated in the panic zone (listed above).

Performance, as evident by the chart above, is tied to mentality and motivation. Our goal is to help our participants find motivation and embrace new challenges as opportunities to grow. We set up engaging golf games that challenge our participants, and assist our participants in setting personal goals that matter to them. When met with challenges, we aim to equip participants with tools to learn from mistakes, and not dwell on them. We practice confidence-building routines and self-talk, and focus on techniques for being positive, patient, and asking for help.

Living in the panic zone causes anxiety, which overtime can lead to burn out. Living in the comfort zone can result in boredom and apathy, which can also drive a participant away. However, when participants live in the stretch zone, golf becomes a game for life,  it keeps us stiving for more, and keeps us excited for what is next.

In our most recent survey, over 95% of our participants said they had fun. If participants are happy, engaged, and motivated, then they are more likely to embrace the tools for overcoming challenges. This fall we look forward to another fun season and helping participants push themselves to new limits, and build tools to manage the panic thoughts should they come.

Registration for the fall season opens Thursday, August 11th at 10am. The season will start September 6th and will end October 29th.  The classes will take place at Baylands Golf Links in Palo Alto, Rancho Del Pueblo Golf Course in San Jose, and Gavilan Golf Course in Gilroy.  We encourage youth 2nd grade and above to join our program and help spread the word. For more information on our programs please visit https://www.firstteesiliconvalley.org/. and click here for the fall schedule. To register please click here

We hope to see you at the course!

Help FTSV Youth Overcome Challenges – Be a Volunteer Coach!

First Tee — Silicon Valley is looking for high quality, caring people that are interested in showing up and guiding others, so they become even better people and leaders of tomorrow. Our volunteer coaches are responsible for bringing our core lessons to life by finding and using coachable moments. They work together to make the classes fun and engaging. They also empower participants to develop perseverance strategies and set goals.

Coaching is fulfilling and beneficial!

  • Coach Mark – “I started coaching First Tee to help kids learn golf, a sport I love. Interestingly, I quickly found out how much more meaningful it is for me to see them learn life skills. It’s witnessing the life skill growth that now really moves me.”
  • Coach Rob – “Understanding how much the juniors look up to the coaches and how much of an effect we have on their lives is impactful.”
  • Coach Catherine – “Volunteering has helped me hone my skills in leadership, patience, and collaboration and makes me feel like I am making a positive impact in my community.”
  • Coach Matt – “FTSV has introduced me to wonderful people and helped me form indispensable relationships. FTSV helps me better the lives of my students and myself!”
  • Coach Jack – “FTSV encourages personal growth and responsibility in a FUN way among friends and caring coaches in a sport that can last a lifetime.”
  • Coach Tracy – “While it’s great to see their golf skills improve over the season, it’s even more rewarding to help them learn and apply the life skills in their daily lives.”

What if I am not an expert coach or golfer?

Our coaches come from all walks of life with different life and golf experiences. We provide life and golf skill training as well training on coach strategies, techniques, and on our coach philosophy. Our goal is to make sure every coach feels supported. Additionally, we have created lesson plans to help everyone is work together and support one another in the content and delivery. There will always be a lead coach for each class coordinating the group of coaches.

What is the time requirement?

  • Volunteer coaches can choose from several class options by location, day of the week, and time.
  • Time commitment is 2.5 hours a day, once a week for an 8-week season. The 2.5 hours include a 30-minute pre-class meeting, 1.5-hour class, and a 30-minute post-class debrief.
